With students across returning to classrooms this fall, Stop Gun Violence PAC is reminding gun owners to practice safe storage.
More than 73 percent of children aged 5 to 14 know where their parents keep their firearms, and more than a third have handled those guns without their parents’ knowledge.
“Every responsible gun owner knows the rules. You don’t leave a firearm unsecured. You don’t leave it where a child can access it. It’s basic gun safety,” Stop Gun Violence PAC Chair Brian Lemek said. “Unfortuately, almost every child that dies from an accidental shooting involves a gun that was left unsecure. Safe storage and responsible gun ownership can help avoid these tragedies.”
Over 90 percent of guns used in accidental shootings of children that resulted in death were left unlocked and loaded.
Stop Gun Violence is a gun owner and sportsmen led PAC founded on the belief that we can respect the Second Amendment while passing meaningful, achievable reforms aligned with responsible gun ownership that save lives. No reform is more achievable, or more consistent with the values of responsible gun owners, than locking up your firearm when it is not in use.
