Following the Trump administration’s announcement last week of more than 30 ATF regulatory rollbacks ,including the proposed repeal of background check requirements for gun show and private sales – and with those proposed rules now open for public comment – Stop Gun Violence PAC Board Chair Brian Lemek released the following statement.
“Responsible gun owners follow the rules. They go through background checks at gun stores, at gun shows, online, everywhere. Most don’t think twice about it. It’s the right thing to do.
“The Trump administration’s decision to roll back background check requirements for gun shows and private sales isn’t a win for gun owners. It’s a gift to the corporate gun lobby that undermines the law-abiding gun owners who already do things the right way. It creates an easy path around a basic safeguard that keeps guns out of dangerous hands.
“Background checks are not a burden on responsible gun ownership. They are the foundation of it. Gutting them protects bad actors, not gun owners’ rights.
“Stop Gun Violence is a gun owners and sportsmen-led organization that believes in smart, achievable reforms that actually save lives. This rollback is neither smart nor safe. We urge every responsible gun owner to submit a public comment and make clear that this rollback does not speak for them. We will continue fighting to elect leaders who know the difference.”
